Overtonium
Overtonium is a cross platform plugin (VST3, AU, LV2 and Standalone) that is an additive synthesiser laid out like a 32-channel mixer. Every channel is one sine oscillator locked to a harmonic of the played note, and every channel has its own tuning, envelope, modulation and place in the stereo field. Additive synthesis usually hides its partials behind a spectrum drawing or a handful of macro controls. This puts all of them on the surface, as faders, so shaping a sound is mixing it.
TUNE sweeps each partial continuously between equal temperament and just intonation. At the just end a partial sits at an exact whole-number ratio with the fundamental and the stack fuses into one timbre. At the equal end each partial snaps to the nearest semitone and the same stack smears into a chord.
Per channel are tuning and start phase, pitch modulation with its own rate, depth and random drift, an envelope with a second one for letting go, tremolo, velocity and pressure amounts, pan, mute and solo, and a fader with its own meter. A noise channel sits beside the 32, with the same controls and a colour knob in place of tuning.
Across the instrument are inharmonic stretch, keyboard tracking, six historical temperaments on any root at any reference pitch from 415 to 466 Hz, a wobble that moves the whole series, a tape echo, a feedback delay network reverb, and a converter that reduces the render rate and bit depth.
LINK gangs the channels so one drag moves them all, either by the same amount or tapered by distance from the one you grabbed, and reaching every channel, the odd ones, the even ones or the ones sharing an interval. MPE is supported, with pitch bend and pressure per note and the slide axis routed to brightness or tuning. Sixteen factory presets are included, and through the VST3 every channel can be routed to an output of its own.
It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. It is free and open source (GNU AGPL v3).
